The incident occurred at about 11 pm last night when three unidentified persons came searching for N. Tomba and as they could not locate him, the intruders instead turned their gun toward his wife identified as N. Indira Devi (45) and  pumped two shots at the chest and shoulder. She was immediately evacuated at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) but she passed away at around mid-night.
N. Tomba is said to be an active worker of Ph. Parijat, minister of health and politburo of CPI state unit.

It is worth noting that a son of an active worker of CPI was abducted on July 19 but subsequently rescued by Manipur police on July 23.
