KONGTHONG (Khatar Shnong): Call a person by singing

They sing and hum to call the names of fellow tribesmen. A tune sung by a caller is a ‘name’ understood only by the villager who responds to it.This village in the remote Khatar Shnong, in East Khasi Hills, follows the unique system of calling their near and dear ones by singing.

‘This practice has been there from time immemorial mainly in Kongthong and adjoining villages from the time of “foremothers”’, said the headman of Kongthong, Mr Kyrtaid Majaw.

Marooned children of the jewel land

Amidst the long standing conflict situation in the already impoverished states of Northeast, a handful of people with vested interest are ripping huge profits from the plight of the people desperate to keep their kitchen running. Human trafficking is one such organized crime which has suddenly become a lucrative and an easy money making business in the region. Despite the effort from various organizations and individuals, child trafficking in the northeast is flourishing; there is no doubt about it. We need to know why desperate parents in the trouble torn state of Manipur are easily lured by traffickers with the promises of free and better education for their child.

India is often called the Big Bully by its South East Asian counterparts and for somewhat valid reasons. In recent times though, the tables have been turned by its biggest neighbour and an expansionist regime from the north.

It is true that China’s tactics against India have most often been underhanded. And inspite of both countries having a data sharing agreement on hydropower projects along the Brahmaputra, China, for several years now, has been denying the existence of any project on the river. But recent findings have shown that once again the ‘Red Dragon’s’ plans have been kept strategically secret. Reports reveal that ‘big brother’ has plans to build a mega dam on their side of the Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet) which will have a 38 gigawatt hydropower plant.
